BIO / MAUREEN CAVANAGH

I spent 14 years at Sports Illustrated before leaving to help Derek Jeter start his media company The Players’ Tribune where I was the founding Creative Director. Currently I am freelancing for The New York Times and counting down the minutes until the Olympics and World Cup.

I really love sports.

And I really love visual storytelling.

My experience spans everything from traditional sports journalism to digital and social media. My biggest talent is knowing who the right people are to hire for any specific job: Whether it’s the team photographer for the Blackhawks, a Brazilian football videographer who knows Neymar or a motion graphics team specializing in MLB animation.

I won a couple of POY’s in Sports, a Webby, NPPA Sports Award, an SPD Award for best new website design and was even up for an Emmy, (we didn’t win but had a really fun time at the party)

There are thousands of untapped stories out there. I love working with teams to amplify and elevate those narratives using different tools to tell those stories.
